Mt Mitchell State Park
Mount
Mitchell, in the heart of the Black Mountains, about 20
miles north of Asheville, is the highest peak in North
America east of the Mississippi River, at least one and
one quarter miles above sea level. Surrounded by the
Mount Mitchell State Park, the oldest State Park in
North Carolina, the mountain was named after Elisha
Mitchell, supposedly the first man to accurately measure
the mountain in 1835, who fell to his death at the
sardonically named Mitchell Falls upon his attempt to
verify his measurements. The tomb of Dr. Mitchell
remains at the summit of the mountain, along with a
stone observation tower to this day, for visitors to pay
their respects to the explorer. Check out our

Mitchell State Park.
Mount Mitchell and the State Park lie surrounded again
by the Pisgah National Forest, together covering more
than 600,000 acres of untouched and untamed North
Carolina forests, rivers, and mountain streams. Mount
Mitchell State Park and Pisgah National Forest offer
three long distance, and many shorter hiking and
backpacking trails, more than 5 tumbling mountain
rivers, a natural hot spring, and border the Great Smoky
Mountains National Park. The Blue Ridge Parkway and the
Appalachian Trail both pass through the national forest.
